"All aspects of solution development - R&D, marketing, distribution, training - must be tailored to the needs of the emerging market community, needs that are often quite different than those of mature markets. Our teams are dedicated to learning about these needs for emerging markets and we're leading the way to designing programs and products that meet those needs." 1

- Anand Tawker, Director, Kuppam HP i-community Project, in 2005.

"The i-community initiative distinguishes itself from several other corporate projects in many ways. First it starts at principles of understanding the community needs and works to create a holistic impact on all the domains that matter to the community. The i-community also embraces a systems thinking approach and integrates the various initiatives into a composite programme." 2

- A National Institute of Smart Government (NISG) study on Kuppam HP i-Community project, in 2004.

HP has been involved in philanthropic activities throughout its history. In the early 2000s, the company decided to link part of its philanthropic activities to its business areas. In 2002, HP came out with an initiative called 'e-inclusion', which was intended to bridge the digital divide by providing increasing number of people across the globe access to information and communication technology (ICT). The e-inclusion efforts of HP are spread across the globe. One of the e-inclusion projects of HP is the i-community project at Kuppam constituency in Chittoor district of the state of Andhra Pradesh (AP), in India. The Kuppam project helped HP to build new markets, an objective envisaged as part of the Restructuring Plan formulated by HP in 1999.
